Live website in PowerPoint

I was wondering if it is possible to show a website in PowerPoint 2010. This turned out to be possible. I found a nice explanation on Howtogeek.

The only problem was that although I have IE9, the above described LiveWeb plugin for PowerPoint 2010 somehow used an older version of IE. I found a solution for this problem here by changing the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION]
“POWERPNT.EXE”=dword:0000270f

THEMIS VIS footprint shapefiles

As there are no THEMIS VIS footprint shapefiles available on the Mars Orbital Data Explorer I made them myself. They can be downloaded from here.

HiRISE: Dunes on Mars

I just saw the following HiRISE image while browing through my ArcGIS Mars database:
dunes
It made me wonder why these dunes only form at the edge of the plateau…

When zoomed in the dunes also show a strange pattern:
pattern
Is this water ice?

The image can be viewed by downloading HiView and pointing it to this URL.

The value of nature

“Because ecosystem services are not fully ‘captured’ in commercial markets or adequately quantified in terms comparable with economic services and manufactured capital, they are often given too little weight in policy decisions. This neglect may ultimately compromise the sustainability of humans in the biosphere. The economies of the Earth would grind to a halt without the services of ecological life-support systems, so in one sense their total value to the economy is infinite.” Costanza et al. (1997)

HiView and ArcGIS 10

The people from the HiRISE camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter just released their own software for viewing the images: HiView. HiView can be easily used within ArcGIS 10. You need to follow these steps:

  1. Download the HiRISE footprints shapefile here. The shapefile is an updated version of the one you can download from the Mars Orbital Data Explorer. My version has an extra column called JPIPURL.
  2. Add the shapefile to ArcMap.
  3. Go to Layer Properties > Display. Select ‘Support Hyperlinks using field’. Select Script and click on Edit. Add the following script:
    Function OpenLink ( [JPIPURL] )
      Dim pathHiView
      Dim argHiView
      Dim objShell
      pathHiView = “C:\Program Files\HiView\HiView.exe”
      argHiView =  “-Image ” & [JPIPURL]
      Set objShell = CreateObject(“Shell.Application”)
      objShell.ShellExecute pathHiView, argHiView, “”, “open”, 1
    End Function
  4. In ArcGIS click on the Hyperlink button (the lightning icon) and select a footprint.
  5. HiView opens and the selected HiRISE image is loaded.

Begraafplaats blijkt chemisch afval dump

Our Fourier Transform

“All things are impermanent”, is a Buddhist saying which I find very true personally. You will find sunshine after rain, happiness after depression. But also rain after sunshine and depression after happiness. The manically depressed among us seem to be addicted to this loop and feel they cannot escape. I guess we all have this feeling of being under the control of our emotions some time. The Buddhist saying helps to see the bigger picture during moments of sadness. It will pass, as will happiness. So live now, now is all we have. Emotions are like sine waves, some have a long period but a small amplitude. Others are the opposite. The sum of all these emotional sine waves over the span of a lifetime makes me think of a fourier transform. Do we have any control over this transform? Can we transform ourselves?
